A Brief History of Electric Expressions Tattoo
Henri’s journey into the world of tattoos began with his apprenticeship with Doc Don Lucas. He recognized the apprenticeship was a rare opportunity, that he would become so grateful for as he learned the art of tattooing.
At that time in the tattoo industry, knowledge of the history and the skill of tattooing was kept very secretive. Besides learning the basic how to of tattooing, artists also had to learn how to make their needles, build their own machines, and mix their own pigments. Over time this changed as supply businesses began to open offering premade needles and machines and premixed pigments. However, they only sold to verified professional tattooers. In order for an artist to be verified they would need another already established artist to vouche for them. A far cry from how it is now where anyone can order any supplies from Amazon.
Henri opened Electric Expressions Tattoo Studio in 1990 with the help of English Craig Jones. This location was going so strong Henri decided to open a new second location on Carollton Ave. in New Orleans. After managing the two locations for 2 years and after almost 10 years in partnership, Henri and Craig parted ways in 1999. Craig kept the location on Veterans Boulevard in Kenner, La and Henri kept the business’ name. Venturing out on his own, Henri had already opened Electric Expressions Tattoo Studio in New Orleans on Carrollton Avenue in 1995. The shop proved to be sucessful but was forced to find a new location, due to a change in the building ownership, which replaced the studio with a McDonald’s. This led Henri to make Canal Street the new home of Electric Expressions. This studio also was successful. However, because it was located right outside of the French Quarter, business was more seasonal and parking was inconvenient for local clients and his soon to be wife, Kayce. After three years on Canal Street he decided to return to Kenner and sold the Canal Street location to Heather Close.
Once again, Electric Expressions would now be operating in Kenner right next to his friend’s bar, cleverly named “The Bar”. As luck would have it the owner of this property chose to move in a much different direction and once again another building was being demolished and forced Electric Expressions to be uprooted. Due to the strict coding zones, after much searching was done, there was only one location for rent where Electric Expressions could reopen. Ironically that location was one building away from where he first opened in Kenner, where it is presently located at 2317 Veterans Blvd. It’s not hard to understand why he takes great pride when talking about Electric Expressions. He put his blood, sweat, and tears into this business and with his Kayce, made it into what it was and is throughout the last 30 plus years.
Then came the debacle of Covid and the chaos of 2020 that no one could see coming. Along with the rest of the world, Electric Expressions was forced to close its doors temporarily in March 2020 due to the Covid pandemic. They were told there was to be a lockdown of all “nonessential” businesses so Henri and Kayce chose to go to a hidden bunker in an undisclosed location to hunker down. They figured why not be someplace that they wanted to be if they were going to be stuck there. They had a lot of time to contemplate life, and what they wanted out of it at this stage in the game. They agreed it was time to slow down and enjoy life outdoors together, away from the hussle and bustle. Henri was turning 60 years old and there was no better time to get out of the city and head to the country. Henri and Kayce knew the time had come to start making a plan for the future of the shop.
After all the work they had put into the studio for the last of 32 years, their decision was not easy. After much contemplation they decided to pass the ownership of Electric Expressions over to his last apprentice, Frank Webb. This would include provisions allowing Henri and Kayce to continue their craft at Electric Expressions. Working by appointment, they continue doing what they love to do and can be easily found at their homebase, Electric Expressions! While Kayce is performing piercings, Henri is able to focus all of his attention to creating and tattooing better than ever!

Many accomplishments were made over those 30 plus years including Henri’s tattoos being featured in Flash, Skin and Ink, Easyriders Tattoo and International Tattoo magazines. Henri and Kayce also had several Artist profiles in Tattoo Magazine. Electric Expressions also hosted Billy Naylor’s Annual VooDoo Tattoo Convention at the Landmark Hotel for 25 years. Electric Expressions Tattoo Studio has been represented world wide at numerous tattoo conventions and for many years at the Sturgis North Dakota Bike Rally.
Now being the Oldest “still running” Tattoo Studio in New Orleans, Frank and his new partner, Alex “Skinny” Gonzales, will undoubtedly move the studio to even greater expectations.
